John Piper Crossway Books 2004-01-09

In Lewis Sperry Chafer’s Systematic Theology (Dallas: Dallas Seminary Press, 1948), he discusses thirty-three things Jesus’ death accomplished (3:225–66). John Piper, pastor for preaching at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Minneapolis, expands on that list by giving fifty reasons why Jesus came to die. Piper devotes two pages to each reason, with each based on a Scripture verse or verses. Though brief, this book presents a thorough discussion of God’s remarkable purposes in Jesus’ death, which was planned from the creation of the world (1 Pet. 1:20; Rev. 13:8). Here is delightful devotional reading and excellent preaching material.
