Houston, TX, is now the most ethnically diverse metropolitan area in the country, surpassing New York City. Wayne Smith (ThM, 1998), pastor of Bethel Church, has the vision and prayer to bring the love and hope provided in Christ to all in his culturally rich city of Houston. Wayne’s heart of compassion becomes evident when his church scours communities still in need of urgent assistance in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey or ministers to the lost and homeless in the Church in the Park service. Wayne often says, “Bethel Church of Houston is a family of believers who are committed to making disciples of Jesus who glorify God in all of life.” As a DTS alum, Wayne continues to inspire and motivate others to share Christ with those in need of hope.
Wayne Smith graduated from DTS with a Master of Theology degree. That was twenty years ago and in the twenty years since he has had a vibrant ministry in the pulpit. Wayne is now the Lead Pastor at The Bethel Church of Houston, a church that is richly steeped in DTS history. The first classes of DTS-Houston were held on the campus of Bethel Church. Bethel Church has had long-serving pastors on their staff who have graduated from DTS as well. Wayne Smith has the charge of leading a church in the most culturally diverse city in the U.S. His church seeks to transform neighborhoods and to reach the lost with the gospel of Christ. Whether mucking out homes in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey or setting up Church in the Park for the homeless to hear the gospel of Christ, God’s Word is at the center of all they do. Wayne gives credit to Dallas Theological Seminary for the education it provided him to communicate the Lord’s Word with confidence. Bethel Church of Houston is a family of believers who are committed to making disciples of Jesus who glorify God in all of life. And their pastor, Wayne Smith, leads the cause for Christ in action, thought, and word.
